What This Means for How You Garden

Once outdoor tap water is off the table, the whole approach to a garden changes — in a good way, if you lean into it instead of fighting it.

Design for water you already have. Rain barrel collection is legal in Colorado (with limits on barrel count and size), and it's often enough to cover a modest garden if you pair it with soil that actually holds moisture.

Compost is your real water strategy. This is the piece people underestimate. Well-finished compost worked into mountain soil dramatically improves water retention. This is less about fertility and more about giving each drop of collected rainwater somewhere to stay instead of running off or evaporating in our dry air and intense UV.

Raised beds and containers beat row gardens. A defined, mulched bed lets you budget water precisely instead of soaking a whole row to reach a few plants. It also warms faster in spring, which matters when your last frost isn't until June.

Mulch heavily, always. At high elevation, evaporation is brutal due to low humidity, high UV, and frequent wind. A thick mulch layer can be the difference between watering twice a week and watering every other day.

What Actually Grows Well Under These Constraints

A few reliable performers for low-water, high-altitude beds:

  • Garlic — planted in fall, largely dormant through the driest months, minimal supplemental water needed once established

  • Root vegetables (carrots, beets) — deep roots access what moisture is there, less surface watering required than leafy crops

  • Culinary herbs (thyme, oregano, sage) — thrive on neglect once established, Mediterranean natives that prefer it dry

  • Cold-hardy greens (kale, chard) — tolerate the short, cool season and don't demand the water that heat-stressed lowland vegetables do

None of this means you can't grow a real garden in the mountains — it means the constraint shapes what "real" looks like.
